What do my test results mean?
Traditional speed tests only measure raw speed. StrikeZone tests the quality and stability of your connection—the factors that actually determine if you lag in multiplayer lobbies or drop from Discord calls.
Latency (Ping)
Reaction TimeWhat it is: Latency is the delay in your connection. It measures how many milliseconds (ms) it takes for a signal to travel from your device to the server and back. Think of it as the round-trip travel time for your data.
🎮 Why it matters: High latency causes input lag. When you click to shoot, cast a spell, or move, high latency means a delay before the server registers your action.
🎯 Good Range: Under 30ms is excellent, 30–80ms is perfectly fine, and anything over 150ms will start causing awkward conversational delays.
Jitter
ConsistencyWhat it is: Jitter is the variation in your latency. If one packet takes 20ms to arrive, but the next takes 120ms, and the third takes 15ms, your connection has high jitter. It means your connection speed is jumping up and down erratically.
🎮 Why it matters: Real-time games and Discord voice chats hate inconsistency. High jitter makes other players teleport/rubberband on your screen and turns voice chat robotic or choppy.
🎯 Good Range: Under 15ms is excellent. Over 30ms will cause stuttering and dropouts in video meetings.
Packet Loss
ReliabilityWhat it is: All information sent over the internet is broken up into tiny chunks called "packets." Packet loss happens when some of these chunks get lost along the way (like a letter getting lost in the post).
🎮 Why it matters: Unlike viewing a web page, real-time games can't wait for lost packets to be resent. Even small amounts of packet loss will cause hits not to register, actions to fail, or games to disconnect.
🎯 Good Range: Ideally, packet loss should be 0%. Anything above 1% will degrade call quality, and over 2% will cause regular connection drops.
Bufferbloat
Traffic ManagementWhat it is: When someone on your network uploads or downloads something big, your router can get overwhelmed and start buffering data unnecessarily. This temporary gridlock is called "Bufferbloat."
🎮 Why it matters: If you have poor bufferbloat handling, your gaming ping will spike from 20ms to 400ms the moment someone else in your house downloads a game update, streams 4K, or backs up photos.
🎯 Good Range: We grade bufferbloat from A+ down to F. A or B means your router manages high traffic perfectly. C or below means your calls will choke under heavy network load.
How do I improve my scores?
- 1. Use an Ethernet Cable: Wi-Fi signals degrade through walls and suffer from local interference. Plugging directly into your router is the easiest way to solve jitter and packet loss.
- 2. Move Closer to the Router: If you must use Wi-Fi, try to have a clear line of sight to the router, or switch to the 5GHz frequency band.
- 3. Enable QoS on Your Router: To fix Bufferbloat, log into your router settings and enable Quality of Service (QoS) or SQM (Smart Queue Management). This prioritizes gaming packets and Discord voice streams over large downloads.
- 4. Try a VPN: If your network scores are great but your games are still lagging or routing poorly, your ISP's routing paths might be sub-optimal. A gaming VPN can establish a more direct route to the game servers.
